INGIURIA. Una sequenza utile per imprecare
Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio/Chiara Guidi, Teho Teardo, Alexander Balanescu, Blixa Bargeld
October 29th, 30th,31st h.20.30
The deep and sonorous soul of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio has urged Chiara Guidi to research into a new art form using “voice as a technical molecular composition” to the music of Teho Teardo. Sharing the stage in this performance is the violinist, Alexander Balanescu and the actor/singer Blixa Bargeld, former soloist of the band Einstürzende Neubauten and musician and vocalist with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
The performance Ingiuria (Curse) explores the origins of this ancient word, deep-rooted also in the Judaeo-Christian tradition from the “Imprecatory Psalms” of the Old Testament to reappear in the violent imprecations written in the diary of one of the September 11th terrorists.
As often happens in formal rituals, sound, rhythm and intonation of the voice are more important than the meaning of the words themselves.
The creative work of Guidi and Teardo on an adaptation of texts by Claudia Castellucci aims to bring to the forefront the physical aspect of voice; its deployment and usage and its power to persuade and beguile. A theatrical touch is added by a recorded base of Guidi’s voice on which Balanescu and Bargeld intervene live.
Balanescu has a classical musical training but has always followed a multi-faceted career. He has performed in a string quartet dedicated to contemporary music, the Arditti Quartet and has also collaborated with jazz musicians such as Carla Bley and John Lourie and other projects together with the Pet Shop Boys and the Yellow Magic Orchestra. The scathing and aching sound of his violin is coupled with the intense, powerful voice of the German singer Bargeld, artist and leader of the Einstürzende Neubautenan, defined as an “industrial rock band” influenced by Dadaism and performance art.
In Ingiuria, the voice is used as a hammering instrument to demolish and metamorphosise words until every syllable is flung from the throat to create impact: an incisive and sonorous weave in which the voice is transfigured to be united in a dream-like fashion with the vibrant violin strings. A dramatic work of sound in which the audience has to think with ears and not with the mind; a performance in which lumps of sound are predominant as seen in another recent work “Madrigale appena narrabile”, by Guidi – one of the founding members and inspiring voices of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio
