In Performance: Levi Gonzalez’s intimacy (NYC)

Intimacy
A Solo Dance by Levi Gonzalez
April 29th – May 1st, 2011
Friday & Saturday @ 8:00 pm
Sunday @ 6:00 pm

BAX
421 Fifth Ave.
Brooklyn, NY

In his solo, intimacy, Levi Gonzalez attempts to bring the practice of making into the moment of live performance. In constructing material for this work, he prioritizes instinct over concept, cultivating sensitivity to what resonates with him on a visceral level. By exploring the idiosyncrasies of his own interests in movement and performance, he builds a structure that exposes his own personal relationship to the form. Often framing the action with language, he establishes a directness with the spectator that resists metaphor, while still leaving space for the engagement of the imagination. Ultimately the work examines the intimacy of the relationship between performer and audience, and how we navigate this shared experience. The solo is being developed in collaboration with dramaturg Susan Mar Landau.

About:

“I am a dance artist living in Brooklyn and have been making work in NYC since 2000. I began choreographing in collaboration with friend and fellow artist luciana achugar. Together we made three produced works and numerous performances which were presented by various NYC venues, including Movement Research at Judson Church, Dance Theater Workshop, The Kitchen, PS122, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, and the Whitney Museum. My first independent work, the whole world has suddenly disappeared, was presented by Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church in May of 2005. My work has also been presented several times by Movement Research, Chez Bushwick, and Dixon Place. My first evening length work, Clusterfuck, was presented by Dance Theater Workshop in Spring 2007. In 2008, I was commissioned to make a new work on the students of George Washington University in Washington, DC and also traveled to Denmark for a creative residency through Movement Research. In the past few years, I was a recipient of a DTW Outer/Space Residency, a Brooklyn Arts Exchange Space Grant, a residency at Abrons Art Center as well as at the Rockbridge Artist Exchange in Lexington, VA. I served as an artist member of the Board of Directors of Movement Research from 2007-09.

I was a 2006 Choreography Fellow with New York Foundation for the Arts. That same year I participated in the Springdance/DTW Dialogue which brought together international artists to show and discuss work with dance theorist André Lepecki. I was selected for the 2006 LEX Dance Residency in the Catskills, was a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence from 2003-04 and an editor for the Movement Research Performance Journal #29. I am currently an editor of Movement Research’s online publication Critical Correspondence and annually serve as artistic advisor for the artists of Dance Theater Workshop’s Fresh Tracks Residency Program. With Dean Moss, I helped develop and co-facilitate an annual workshop called Form and Practice for emerging choreographers at The Kitchen from 2005-07.

As a performer, I have worked extensively with John Jasperse Company and Donna Uchizono Company. I was a member and rehearsal assistant for Donna Uchizono Company from 1998-2005, during which time I performed and taught throughout the US, Europe and South America. I have also worked with ChameckiLerner, Jeremy Nelson, Dennis O’Connor and Michael Laub’s Remote Control Productions in Europe. Prior to NYC I worked with Transít Dance Company in Spain and with Assembly Dance Theater in Taiwan.

I am originally from Los Angeles where I graduated with a BFA in Dance from California Institute of the Arts in 1997. I have taught technique and repertory at various residencies throughout the US and abroad. I teach regularly for Movement Research in New York City.”
