In Performance: Progressive Performance Festival (Brattleboro, Vermont, USA)

June 2-4 in downtown Brattleboro

Continuing VPL’s experimental approach to presentation and performance, the Progressive Performance Festival is designed as a full evening where performers and audiences will be on the move. Featuring performance works by three outstanding dance-makers who create playful and thought-provoking work for small audiences, this non-traditional format is designed to bring audiences and artists together to stimulate conversation and the imagination.

Each evening an audience of 35 will gather at the Blue Moose Cafe to pick up tickets and chat over drinks and tapas before being transported by bus to three performance sites in Brattleboro.  (Tickets are also available to the individual shows.) The Festival features the work of three contemporary choreographers who have come to Vermont from Minneapolis, Northampton and New Haven to develop new work as part of VPL’s Lab Program. These artists make work that bridge, stretch and deepen the definition of contemporary dance.

THE THANK-YOU BAR

The Thank-You Bar is a performance that combines dance, live music, storytelling and visual image to create an interactive work that engages audiences and offers the question, “what is a true home?” Created and performed by Alaska-born choreographer Emily Johnson with composers/musicians James Everest and Joel Pickard, the Thank –You Bar connects ideas of displacement, longing, and language to history, and shakes up preconceived notions of culture, architecture, and igloo-myth. Visit Emily Johnson’s residency section.

THEATER IN THE HEAD

“Ms. Myers can indeed shape an onstage world.” – The New York Times“Theater in the Head” is a highly kinetic satire about fame.  The piece takes place on a 4’x6′ pink shag carpet, it is a quest for intimacy between performers and their audience.   Developed with composer Josh Quillen (of So Percussion), the 45-minute ensemble work incorporates Myers robust athleticism fused with theatricality and understated humor. Visit Adele Myers’s residency section.

 

Candice Salyers
SIGNIFICANT FIGURES

Candice Salyers is a solo performer and choreographer who creates kinetic installation pieces that juxtapose slow-moving body transformations with visual environments.  Her melding of dance and conceptual art results in inviting performance works that bridge the visual and performing arts.  Her works challenge the assumption of the female body as objectified by the viewers gaze.
