Highlights: Crossing the Line September 17-October 16, 2011 (NYC)

Crossing the Line is conceived as a platform to present vibrant new developments in artistic practices on both sides of the Atlantic. It is initiated, conceived, and produced by the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) in partnership with leading New York cultural institutions.

This fifth edition of Crossing the Line presents diverse and dynamic new work from significant artists who are revolutionizing artistic practices on both sides of the Atlantic. The Festival takes you from Central Park and Museum Mile to an historic Gilded Age-era mansion, as well as to some of the city’s most notable arts venues. Curated around three principal program perspectives—Fiction & Non-Fiction; Lecture/Performance series; and Endurance/Resistance/Inspiration—the Festival invites you to re-imagine your world.

Crossing the Line 2011 is co-curated by Lili Chopra, FIAF Artistic Director, and Simon Dove, Director, Herberger Institute School of Dance, Arizona State University.

In any society, the image of the body is built with its own ideology. What marks are left by political history on the body? Rachid Ouramdane performs a duet with multi-instrumentalist Jean-Baptiste Julien, delving into notions of nationhood and identity by examining the relationship between the body and power.

This event is part of Endurance/Resistance/Inspiration,
one of Crossing the Line 2011’s three curatorial program perspectives.

Molecular biologist turned groundbreaking choreographer, Xavier Le Roy uses the “illustrated lecture” format to take audiences through his professional journey from scientist to dance maker.

He offers perspectives on politics and the power structures that determine what research really gets done within institutions, and examines the assumptions that frequently determine choices made in the performing arts world.

In this evening-length work, Kimberly Bartosik creates a choreographic play on power, desire, and value. She constructs a dialogue between art forms, as the three dancers and one visual artist perform their crafts live, alongside one another, in multi-layered scenes.

During each performance, Brooklyn-based collage artist Jonathan Allen builds a work of art in real-time using cheap objects (purchased from 99¢ stores) that the dancers offer and use to attract him. As these objects move from the dancers’ game of seduction and exchange to become part of a “work of art,” their significance and value transform.

Post-show talk will be moderated by Simon Dove, Crossing the Line co-curator and Director, Herberger Institute School of Dance, Arizona State University.
