The next time you deign to think yourself cooler than the next person, think again. Our world runs on the brainpower and talent of the classically uncool. While we’re sleeping off our hangovers, brigades of unappreciated geeky folk are busily honing skills the cooler kids don’t know the first thing about. Behind every smartphone we hold, piece of designer clothing we wear, and genius piece of music on our playlist is an expert nerd with such passion, dedication, and intellectual capacity it makes our mediocrity look everything but cool.

It’s a geek-eat-geek world in the upper strata of the highly skilled and brilliant. And when two such class acts meet, us commoners better take cover and prepare to be dazzled. Tonight, world-renowned (but no less bloodthirsty) pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis will take to the ivories and make jaws drop at Germany’s very first Piano Battle at Sophiensaele. Over the course of the evening, the ruthless, quick-fingered virtuoso combatants will compete in multiple rounds of both classical and contemporary piano music, giving the audience the power to decide who came out on top in each round. And should the runner-up be a sore loser, thankfully there’s a rematch scheduled for Saturday.

Ihr habt die Coolness aus Eimern gesoffen? Geht lieber noch mal in euch. Die Welt wird nämlich vor allem von Leuten bewegt, die ihr wahrscheinlich eher als „uncool” bezeichnen würdet. Während wir unseren Kater ausschlafen, sind Heerscharen von Geeks damit beschäftigt, Talente zu kultivieren, von denen die coolen Kids nicht den blassesten Schimmer haben. Egal ob Smartphones, Designerklamotten oder großartige Musik — überall sind leidenschaftliche, hingebungsvolle, smarte Nerds am Werk und rauben unserer Mittelmäßigkeit noch den letzten Anschein von Coolness.

Im Kreise der Virtuosen und Hochtalentierten werden die Kämpfe dann allerdings umso unerbittlicher, und wenn zwei Titanen ihrer Disziplinen den Ring betreten, gehen wir Normalos zum Gaffen besser in Deckung. Heute Abend sorgen die weltbekannten Pianisten Andreas Kern und Paul Cibis bei Deutschlands erstem „Piano Battle” in den Sophiensaelen für offene Münder. Im Laufe des Abends treten die mitleidlosen Kombattanten in mehreren Runden gegeneinander an, spielen sich durch die Epochen klassischer Musik bis in die Gegenwart und überlassen am Ende dem Publikum die Entscheidung darüber, wer gewonnen hat. Am Sonntag besteht Gelegenheit zur Revanche.
