About Squid

In this original evening length performance Houle, with a cast of musicians, magicians, palm readers, dancers, and all around people about town, will create a narrative that parallels Alice’s journey down the rabbit hole.  Using sculptural costumes, appropriated and original text, pedestrian choreography and Méliés-esque sets Houle and her crew will journey through her head, the psyche of mass media and the outer echelons of a universe with the hopes of better understanding the fabric of our beings.  With tools from the anthropologist’s, psychologist’s and surrealist’s tool belts the ensemble will question both how identity is constructed and unraveled.

Christina Sukhgian Houle has studied and performed comedic improvisation at The Second City (IL), been named by the Austin Chronicle as one of the Top Ten Dance Phenomena of 2008, worked with Creative Time (NY), and has been a visiting artist at Spelman College (GA).  Her videos videos and choreography have been seen at festivals in NY, LA, Chicago, Mexico, and the Netherlands.   She is a recipient of the Andy Warhol Foundation Idea Fund Grant and has served as an artist in residence at Mildred’s Lane and SOMA.  Currently Houle is in the second year of her MFA in visual art at Columbia University.  More information on Houle and this project can be found at christinasukhgiahoule.weebly.com.
