In Performance: GO FORTH (COIL)

Rooted in “Going Forth By Day”, a canon of Egyptian Funerary texts, Kaneza Schaal’s GO FORTH has the audience journey to the underworld (technically underwater) to examine the complexities of Death.  This journey is literal. Audience is guided through the basement corridors of the Westbeth Artists Community. The walls are covered in piquant photography and text from “Going Forth”. The walk is long. At the end of the winding road is a tomb where the main event takes place. The space itself has so much character it speaks as loud at the performers. We’re led through seven distinct vignettes based on selections from “Going Forth…” by three charismatic black male performers Justin Hicks, William Nadylam, and David Thomson. They climb, shout, scream, joke, and even offer us beverages as they guide us to an inevitable point of departure. GO FORTH reinforces the philosophy that Death is another beginning.
