In Performance: I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING BETTER NOW (COIL)

David Neumann and Advanced Beginner Group I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING BETTER NOW is inspired by the death of David Neumann’s parents which sandwiched Hurricane Sandy. A hurricane is an appropriate metaphor for this performance. We see a flurry of emotions centered around the decline of a man who was once the master of his domain. I UNDERSTAND redefines death as a kind of failure. It uses failure as way to highlight the beauty of Death. Neumann has created a wacky, resplendent mess that is a lot of fun and a little sad.  The scenic element designed by MacAuthur Genius Grant winner Mimi Lien is a playground that has many surprises for Neumann and his performers. The ending is a great example of scenic design, staging, and performance coming together to make the perfect storm.
