Acting and Devising Intensive in Thailand (Bankok, Thailand) June 10 – 23, 2018
Online Application: http://culture-collective.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Acting-Intensive-2018.pdf
Fee to Participate: $2,900
Description Of Opportunity:
In 2015, artist / teacher Loni Berry created Culture Collective Studio, an English speaking theatre in Bangkok, Thailand. The award-winning theatre is now hosting a 12-day acting training intensive. A maximum of 12 international students participate in this unique multi-cultural experience.
Students share their time between class work in Culture Collective’s black box theatre and field-trips to historical and famous sites. The classwork includes workshops with master teachers in Thai dance, Thai puppetry, and Thai theatre makeup. Students then incorporate their experiences into an original / ensemble devised performance of a Thai story. The workshop culminates with a final performance presented to a public audience.
Students also study the Gister Method of Acting (developed by Earl Gister, former chair of the Yale School of Drama’s MFA acting program), with focus on character development and text analysis and a guest master teacher will focus on ensemble and devised creation training.
This workshop emphasizes the role of the actor as a storyteller. Students collaborate to devise a script (dialogue and movement) to tell the story of the disappearance of Jim Thompson. The Gister Method is used to focus on character development and interactions with other actors as they share in telling this story. Some of the devising strategies covered in the workshop are idea mapping, research, storyboarding, improvisation, rapid prototyping, iteration, and an open frame works approach to rehearsal.
Acting is taught by Loni Berry. He is the artistic director of Culture Collective Studio, is from the United States and holds graduate degrees from Brown University and the Yale School of Drama. He studied acting with Earl Gister, directing with Lloyd Richards and Anne Bogart, and playwriting with August Wilson and Paula Vogel. He has written, directed and performed in plays at several theatres, including American Place Theatre, Great Lakes Theater Festival, Hartford Stage, The Kennedy Center (American College Theatre Festival), LaJolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, The Public Theatre, and Seattle Repertory Theatre. He has over 30 years of experience as a teacher of acting, directing, and playwriting, including Williams College, Smith College and University of California San Diego. In addition, he is the founding director of Oakland School for the Arts, in Oakland, California. He is a former professor at Mahidol University and currently teaches at International College, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University.
Devising is taught by Caden Manson. He is Head of the Directing Program at Carnegie Mellon University, where he focuses on performance and theater. He is the artistic director of New York-based, new media
performance ensemble Big Art Group. His theatrical works have been presented at theatres and festivals throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States. His scholarly works have been included in major publications worldwide.
