Get The Application Strategy

LMCC Creative Unrestricted uses three equally important assessment criteria: artistic quality, timeliness of support, and community and field impact. Artistic quality considers the rigor, evolution, and commitment demonstrated through an applicant’s practice over time. Timeliness considers how the funding would strengthen or sustain the practice or organization. Community and field impact considers the applicant’s contribution to audiences, peers, New York City’s cultural vitality, and the performance field.

Applicants are also required to submit one example of past artistic work. A second sample is optional. LMCC accepts URLs or file uploads for audio, visual, text, and image formats.

About LMCC Creative Unrestricted

Creative Unrestricted is part of LMCC’s Manhattan Arts Grants program. For the 2027 cycle, applicants select among Project Funding, Arts Education Program Funding, and General Operating Funding. Creative Unrestricted is the General Operating Funding track and is limited to the performing arts.

The program specifically addresses artists and small arts organizations with sustained bodies of work. LMCC describes these applicants as often falling between early-stage project grants and the smaller number of large-scale institutional funding opportunities available in the field. Funds may support organizational capacity, administrative infrastructure, and the broader conditions required to develop artistic work.

Applicants should also consider Creative Unrestricted within the larger Manhattan Arts Grants cycle. LMCC permits only one proposal for project funding or general operating support during the cycle. An applicant selecting Creative Unrestricted therefore cannot submit another Manhattan Arts Grants proposal through Creative Engagement, UMEZ Arts Engagement, or Creative Learning during the same cycle.

Why The LMCC Creative Unrestricted Matters

LMCC Creative Unrestricted provides two years of general operating support rather than funding a single proposed project. That structure allows eligible expenses to address the ongoing conditions required to maintain an artistic practice or small arts organization in Manhattan. LMCC specifically lists expenses including salaries, artist fees, project costs, residential rental, healthcare, childcare, debt repayment, venue and equipment rental, accessibility services, technical support, marketing, materials, and supplies.

The two-year structure also establishes specific requirements for receiving the full award. The first $10,000 installment supports eligible 2027 expenses. To receive the second installment, recipients must participate in a brief interim conversation with LMCC. All grant funds must be expended by December 31, 2028, and a Final Report is due August 31, 2029.
