Olivia Shaffer is a choreographer based on the unceded Coast Salish territories, also known as Vancouver, BC. She holds a BFA in dance and a Liberal Arts Certificate from Simon Fraser University. Olivia creates living, embodied work, rooted in structured improvisations. Harnessing the mediums of movement and voice, she dives into the human condition, probing paradox, and forming resonant bonds with her audience. Her work has been presented by New Works, Small Stage, Shooting Gallery, and has received support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council.
Olivia is also an accomplished performer and improviser; over the last decade, she has interpreted the work of choreographers such as Helen Walkley, Alvin Tolentino/Co. ERASGA, Delia Brett & Daelik/MACHiNENOiSY, Starr Muranko/Raven Spirit Dance, Vanessa Goodman/Action at a Distance, among others. She dances with EDAM Dance, Vancouver’s revered company in Contact Improvisation, and is the Assistant to the Artistic Director, Peter Bingham.
Olivia teaches regularly at institutions for professional, pre-professional and community dancers. She has taught dance locally at Douglas College, SFU, Modus Operandi, Polymer Dance, Leviathan Studios, Salt Spring Jam, and internationally at the Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation, the Berkeley Jam, and as far as the University of the Philippines, Manila.
