Bio

Mercedes Searer is a NYC based movement artist. Identity and our notions of fixedness around it are central to her artistic practice. She invests in the idea that bodies are perpetually engaged in processes of biological, social, and cultural performance. Her work explores the gradation of performativity, playing with the dynamic range between pedestrian to hyperbolic performance states. Manifesting these states and supply shifting between them is the basis of her artistic investigation. Employing various physiological and psychological states, she works with the various rates that performance range can occur in.
Mercedes has shown her work at One plus One Favelab (Athens, GR), Whitebox (New York), BKSD (New York), and Le Petit Versailles (New York), among others.
As a performer Mercedes has worked for such greats as Elizabeth Streb, Sara Rudner, Twyla Tharp, Steve Paxton, and Lucinda Childs. Most recently she created a work Selfdom that opened at WhiteBox Gallery in NYC in 2020 as part of PERFORMA. She is currently working in two projects, Fleshy with Sonia Lopes Soares that looks at the organic conditions of the body and Kevin Fay’s embodied research project looking at how language upholds systems of oppression such as sexism, capitalism, and toxic masculinity.
