Hunter Gause is an international director, his body of work is inclusive of classic and contemporary plays, dance theater concerts, art installation, and opera.
Hunter directs artistic, inventive, and charged performances.
Ocular, revisionist, and emotionally complex is his theatrical world.
Work has been presented and developed by Danspace Project, The Tank, Performance Space 122, Dixon Place, Movement Research, Chez Bushwick, Stella Adler Outreach, Allouche Gallery, Hangar Theatre, The Woods Cooperative, The Orchard Project, New York City Department of Corrections, among others.
Hunter’s assistant work has been with directors Michael Alvarez and Ashley Tata at New York Theatre Workshop, The Flea Theater, Prelude Festival, and The Tank. Additionally, he is a member of The Play Company Literary Readers Wing.
His awards and residencies include The Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation 2019/20 Observership.
Hunter’s early career began by learning the value between the experimental and the conventional through working alongside The Wooster Group, Big Dance Theater, and Robert Schenkkan.
Training includes a cross-section of practices from theatere, dance, scenic design, and puppeteering from JoAnne Akalatis, Andrei Serban, Jean-Guy Lecat, Mary Overlie, and Basil Twist.
Education includes a BA in Directing and Theatre Performance from Marymount Manhattan College and continued studies in Fine Art and Creative Interior Design at The Pratt Institute.
