A UK-BASED POST GRADUATE RESEARCHER A FRENCH POST GRADUATE RESEARCHER TO OBSERVE AND ANALYSE THE ARTISTIC PROJECTS DEVELOPED AS PART OF THE ZEPA 2 NETWORK

ZEPA 2 network is recruiting: A UK-BASED POST GRADUATE RESEARCHER A FRENCH POST GRADUATE RESEARCHER TO OBSERVE AND ANALYSE THE ARTISTIC PROJECTS DEVELOPED AS PART OF THE ZEPA 2 NETWORK COMMISSIONNED BY ZEPA 2.

ZEPA 2 (European Zone of Artistic Projects) is a continuation of the ZEPA 1 project, which succeeded in implementing a network dedicated to the development of outdoor arts across Southern England/Northern France, thanks to the support of the European cross-border cooperation programme Interreg IVA France (Channel) England, co-financed by the ERDF.

For this second phase, running from 2013 to 2014, seven arts organisations, three in the UK and four in France, will be sharing resources and experiences to develop research and university exchanges around outdoor arts and contribute to the professional development of emerging outdoor artists. The network will also facilitate artists’ touring across various areas, particularly isolated areas, increasing interactions between artists and communities, and through the organisation of Anglo-French artistic events.

The ZEPA 2 members in the UK are: SeaChange Arts (Great Yarmouth) University of Winchester Vivacity (Peterborough) And in France: Atelier 231 – National centre for outdoor arts (Sotteville-lès-Rouen) – lead partner Pôle National Cirque et arts de la rue (Amiens) Le Fourneau – National centre for outdoor arts (Brest) Culture Commune – National performing arts organisation in Bassin Minier du Pas-de-Calais (Loos-en-Gohelle)

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The ZEPA 2 network is commissioning a research analysing both the social and economic effects of selected outdoor arts events and related cultural projects delivered within the European Zone of Artistic Projects, ie the area covered by the ZEPA 2 project (Southern England/Northern France). The aim is to provide the ZEPA 2 partners, through this research, with objective information based on ground work observation – and, in broader terms, to respond to the lack of research and data relating directly to the outdoor arts sector.

The aims of this research are as follows: Provide an analysis of the social and economic impact of Anglo-French artistic events – Provide an analysis of the related outreach projects delivered in local areas – Gather data in regard to the profile of people involved in outreach projects – Evaluate the impact of the ZEPA 2 network’s profile in each of the ZEPA 2 areas – Highlight the specific features that are related to the outreach and community engagement in the context of outdoor arts undertaken within the ZEPA 2 project

METHODOLOGY AND SCOPE OF THE STUDY The partners of the network will define the field of the study, ie the events and projects that the two selected researchers will be asked to analyse. Each partner will therefore put forward an event, a company’s tour and/or outreach related and a project involving universities. Such events/projects will be based within the ZEPA 2 area, in France and in the UK, and will be held between Sept 2013 and July 2014. A detailed schedule of these projects will be included as part of the full role description of the two researchers. The research will involve: – Defining the scope of the research and the methodology along with a document/background research – Quantitative data collection aiming to suggest indicators and quantitative results related to the social and economic impact of the projects – Qualitative data complementing and supporting the socio-economic data collected, this aimed at collecting feedback of participants’ experience in the selected arts projects and outreach programmes and analyzing audience reception of targeted groups.

MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING OF THE PROJECT To carry out the research, the ZEPA 2 network is recruiting two research-capable students (English-speaking and French-speaking). Both will report to a research group made of University researchers/teachers/lecturers from Universities involved in the ZEPA 2 network. ZEPA 2 partner Pôle National Cirque et Arts de la Rue d’Amiens is responsible for the overall management of this project, and will liaise with the French researcher, whilst the UK-based researcher will be reporting to the Faculty of Arts of the University of Winchester, also ZEPA 2 partner. The research group will be made of University researchers/teachers from the universities based within the ZEPA 2 area, ie the University of Winchester, Université de Bretagne Occidentale (Brest), Université de Rouen, Université de Picardie Jules Verne (Amiens), Université d’Artois; and possibly the University of Brighton. A detailed schedule will be developed in collaboration with the two researchers at the start of the study, describing its key milestones, the agreed methodology, the field of the study and reporting deadlines. The research/study will start in September 2013 for a completion in December 2014.

PROFILE REQUIRED – PhD student or researcher who already holds a Masters or/and a PhD in Sociology, Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Evaluation of Public Policies, Economics applied to Culture, Arts Management – Ability to use tools applied to field-based sociological study (quantitative and qualitative) – Knowledge of the arts/cultural sector, ideally outdoor arts – Keen interest in the topics of community engagement and community arts – Ability to use own initiative, strong oral and written communication skills – Bilingual or very good level of French for the UK-based researcher and English for the French-based researcher.
