#ItGetsBitter /DARKMATTER
Imperialism, gut flora, white supremacy, leftist nursery rhymes, the gentrification of “the” LGBT movement, and Harry Potter’s supposed Patil twins are all subjects of poetic expression and biting political satire for queer duo, DARKMATTER in their evening #ItGetsBitter. South Asian performers Janani Balasubramanian and Alok Vaid-Menon present a thorough and impassioned dissection of the realities of institutionalized oppression in the United States while infusing caustic wit throughout.
In one section Alok declares that “Living in America is to be living in a constant state of delusion.” #ItGetsBitter serves as a welcome wake up call to the systematic violence being perpetrated on queer and trans people of color, insisting that privileged, white, neoliberal Americans examine this status quo they obscure behind empty slogans and hollow materialism.
