Through a combination of multimedia, puppetry, and toy theatre deliberately walking the line between high tech and low class, Steve of Tomorrow stages an apocalypse in the age of social media and corporate “news” entertainment with an absurdity that seems unsettlingly close to reality. Defying the idealistic promise of the future portrayed in science fiction the piece asks if humanity is instead moving towards a future even more apathetic and vapid than today, if capitalism and technology will one day give us exactly what we want and that we’ll find it just as unfulfilling. The piece is uproariously funny throughout due in no small part to the brilliant work of performers, David Commander and Lisa Clair who’s puppeteering and voice work were always specific and effective even when the pace of the show is manic. Rob Ramirez’s state of the art tech, well-designed and cleverly deployed also deserves praise.
