Opportunities: The Performance Project Artist-in-Residence @ University Settlement 2022 – 2023 (NYC) Deadline Jan 31, 2022

For 2022 -2023 The Performance Project @ University Settlement is calling for dynamic artists who are ready to engage, connect, and co-create with our communities. Our model continues to move towards greater community engagement centering community voice in curation, production, and decision making. We want to work with artists who prioritize casting and integrating members of our programs into both their creative process and when possible their productions.

The Performance Project welcomes applications from people of all genders, nationalities, races, cultural backgrounds, ages, religions, languages, different abilities, sexual orientations or socio-economic statuses.

This opportunity is open to artists working in the performing arts, including but not limited to dance/movement, spoken word, theater, music, and immersive experiences. Artists must live in New York City. The residency will be for 12 months from March 2022 to March 2023.

There will be four spots open for 2022/23 Performance Project Artists-in-Residence. One application per artist or company/collective, please.

We are seeking artists who create work that addresses themes resonant with New Yorkers who live in public housing, who are recent immigrants, and who too often do not see their stories and perspectives reflected on the stages of our city. Before submitting an application, we highly encourage you to learn more about University Settlement, the communities it engages with, and the programs it offers. You can visit us online at universitysettlement.org. To see work from our communities and other artists we’ve worked with, visit our Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSIHiCagN41B9y0zc-nQnzA

We look forward to your application!

* An additional artist’s fee of $500 for a mid-residency sharing of work-in-progress or a public engagement related to artist’s community engagement (to be paid via check in one payment of $500 after the presentation of the work-in-progress or public engagement)

* Technical and artistic support with community engagements, and culminating and mid-point projects

* Rehearsal and performance space in Speyer Hall (184 Eldridge Street) based on space availability

Artists will be expected to:

* Engage with the University Settlement community in a meaningful way as part of their creative process

* Meet quarterly with fellow Artists-in-Residence and The Performance Project staff

* Engage with The Performance Project Fellows for one of the Fellows’ meetings

* Have a mid-residency sharing of work-in-progress or a public engagement related to artist’s community engagement

* Have a culminating event or performance at the end of their residency, incorporating aspects of the artist’s community engagement

For 2022 – 2023, we are anticipating that community engagement and projects will be in-person engagements, but may occur online or virtually in accordance to ongoing COVID-19 guidance from New York City and State, and the CDC.

Please be aware that persons selected as 2022/23 Performance Project Artists in Residence will need to be fully vaccinated according to current New York City and State guidelines, which may include a booster shot. At the time of acceptance as an Artist-in-Residence, artists will need to provide proof of full vaccination as defined by New York City and State.

Further information will be given to selected artists.
