Description Of Opportunity:

ECC Performance Art is seeking artists’ submissions for its upcoming exhibition On Camera: Performing the Self, which will run from July 15- August 15 during the 2022 Biennale Danza and Venice Biennale at ECC Italy’s Palazzo Bembo in Venice, Italy.

“At the turn of the twentieth century, the release of the Kodak Brownie camera made the technological medium of self portraiture accessible to the general public. Over a century later, the debut of the Sony Portapak advanced lens- based practice and brought the moving image into the hands of the masses. Today, cell phone technology and social media has created an enormous field for visual representation while generating a new set of questions around self-representation on the one hand and media art on the other.

For centuries, female-identifying practitioners have been using these technologies to explore their self-image against social discourses, for storytelling and to share in cultural tradition and ritual. The works in the exhibition highlight the works of female-identifying makers who use the camera as a medium for self- exploration, social connectivity, cultural diplomacy, and exchange. The performative videos aim at stimulating a dialogue amongst women who come from different geographical and socio-political backgrounds while highlighting individual concerns and contexts. Taking an intersectional approach, with the goal of amplifying the voices of women from around the world and challenging the universalization of women’s experience, the works in the exhibition critique the notion of homogenization by exposing their idiosyncratic experiences and prompt reflection on issues of identity politics, performance and cultural expression.”

The exhibition is curated by Rah Eleh with ECC Performance Art and organized in collaboration with ECC Italy. It is made possible with funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Call Details:

We are seeking performative video works from women and artists identifying as female. We especially encourage submissions by women of color and non-Western and non-European practitioners. Selected artists will receive an honorarium of EUR 200 for their participation.
