Want the Strategy Behind This Application
This call is structured around long-term commissioning relationships, racial and cultural justice, and the ability to organize a project across multiple partners and public engagements. Most applications fail at the level of alignment, where proposals describe an artistic idea without clearly defining how the project will function within the Creation Fund structure. Strategy Coach Notes break down how to position the work within the early development phase, how reviewers assess relationship-building and feasibility, and how to construct a proposal that connects the narrative, timeline, budget, public engagement plan, and commissioner relationships into a coherent project system.
About the NPN Creation Fund
The National Performance Network Creation Fund is designed to support the earliest stages of artistic creation while building relationships between artists, presenting organizations, and communities. The fund prioritizes projects that advance racial and cultural justice and encourages long-term collaboration between artists and commissioning partners. Unlike many artist grants focused solely on production outcomes, the Creation Fund emphasizes process, development, labor, and exchange. The program explicitly supports projects that are still evolving and acknowledges that timelines, structures, and artistic approaches may shift during development.
Applications must be organized through a Lead Commissioner that is an official NPN National Partner. Each project must also include at least one additional co-commissioner. The co-commissioners commit to presenting the completed work through a paid public engagement within three years of the award date. These engagements may take many forms including performances, exhibitions, workshops, residencies, or hybrid community exchange models. The structure is intentionally relationship-based and encourages sustained collaboration rather than one-time presentation models.
The guidelines repeatedly stress that projects should remain realistic in scale and financially sustainable. Applicants are encouraged to think carefully about touring costs, collaborator fees, technical needs, and the long-term viability of the work. NPN explicitly states that applications are not judged on grantsmanship or polished writing. Review criteria focus on alignment with program goals, authentic relationships, and the project’s connection to communities historically underinvested in by the arts sector.

Who Should Apply to the NPN Creation Fund
This opportunity is particularly strong for artists and companies already developing relationships with presenting organizations, universities, museums, community spaces, or interdisciplinary arts institutions. The structure favors collaborative projects with clear community engagement strategies and long-term development plans. Projects rooted in performance, socially engaged practice, interdisciplinary work, experimental theater, dance, live art, installation, hybrid media, and public exchange align well with the guidelines.
The program is also especially relevant for artists working within racial justice, cultural justice, disability justice, Indigenous frameworks, queer and trans practices, and community-centered methodologies. The guidelines place significant emphasis on authentic relationships and collaborative ethics. Projects that are already close to completion may be less competitive than works still in active development.

Why The NPN Creation Fund Opportunity Matters
The Creation Fund remains one of the more structurally distinct commissioning programs in the United States performance and interdisciplinary arts field. The program supports artistic development through a networked model rather than an isolated grant structure. The emphasis on commissioner relationships, public engagement, and community accountability creates a framework that can sustain projects beyond a single funding cycle. The unrestricted nature of the funding is also notable. Artists may use support for collaborator fees, housing, food, technical development, research, and other process-based needs that are often excluded from traditional production grants.
