The defining feature of this residency is the partnership model. Artists cannot submit an application independently. Every proposal must be developed with a partner organization that commits financial support, professional mentorship, and continued engagement before, during, and after the residency. Reviewers evaluate the artistic proposal alongside the strength of this institutional relationship, the feasibility of the residency plan, and the project’s connection to the French and Paris-region cultural ecosystem. Strong applications demonstrate why the residency requires time in Paris, how the partner organization will actively support the work, and how the proposed research can benefit from sustained engagement with local artistic communities. Contemporary Performance Network members receive detailed Strategy Coach Notes that examine the evaluation criteria, application materials, reviewer priorities, and practical strategies for building a stronger submission.

About the Paris Artist Residency

The Institut français x Cité internationale des arts Residency Program is one of France’s largest international artist mobility programs. Each year it brings nearly seventy artists and cultural professionals from around the world to Paris to develop research and creative projects across disciplines including theatre, dance, performance, visual arts, music, literature, cinema, architecture, design, digital creation, photography, fashion, gastronomy, criticism, curating, crafts, circus arts, puppetry, and urban planning. Residents are based at the historic Marais site of Cité internationale des arts, where private furnished studios are combined with access to professional artistic facilities and an international community of practitioners. The program is administered by Institut français in partnership with Cité internationale des arts and supported by the French Ministry of Culture and the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

What Is Offered

  • Furnished private live-work studio at Cité internationale des arts in the Marais district of Paris.
  • Minimum residency grant of €1,100 per month, paid directly by the partner organization.
  • International travel costs funded by the partner organization.
  • Health, repatriation, and civil liability insurance funded by the partner organization.
  • Visa fees funded by the partner organization where applicable.
  • Access to an auditorium.
  • Access to three exhibition spaces.
  • Access to eight rehearsal studios.
  • Access to shared printmaking, screen-printing, and ceramics workshops.
  • Opportunity to participate in one of France’s largest international artist residency programs, supporting nearly seventy residents annually across all artistic disciplines.

Who Should Apply

This residency is intended for established artists and cultural professionals who already maintain an active professional practice and can demonstrate a clearly defined research or creative project. Applicants must have lived outside France for at least five years, possess professional proficiency in either French or English, and be available for the full residency period. The program is open across numerous disciplines, including theatre, dance, performance, visual arts, cinema, digital creation, music, literature, architecture, design, photography, fashion, gastronomy, criticism, curating, crafts, and street arts.

Applicants should begin by identifying an appropriate partner organization. Because organizations submit applications on behalf of artists and commit to financial and professional support, building this relationship is the first stage of the application process rather than the final administrative step. Projects that already have meaningful connections to Paris or the wider Île-de-France artistic community are particularly well positioned.

Why The Paris Artist Residency Matters

Few international residency programs operate at this scale while welcoming artists from every discipline and every region of the world. The Institut français x Cité internationale des arts Residency Program combines sustained time for research with direct access to one of Europe’s most active cultural capitals. Its emphasis on institutional partnership also encourages projects that extend beyond an individual residency and develop lasting professional relationships. Artists who already collaborate with cultural organizations, festivals, universities, production companies, museums, or independent arts organizations will find a framework designed to strengthen those relationships while expanding their international networks through a significant period of research and creative development in Paris.
