About the Columbia Paris Fellowship
The Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination brings a cohort of up to 15 Fellows together at Reid Hall in Paris each year. Approximately half of the cohort consists of Columbia faculty and postdoctoral fellows, while the other half consists of artists and writers from around the world. The structure places creative practitioners in sustained conversation with researchers and scholars across disciplines. Fellows spend the academic year pursuing individual projects while participating in the Institute community.
The Fellowship is structured around sustained residence in Paris. Fellows have their own offices at the Institute and receive administrative and research support. They also receive access to Columbia libraries and research facilities in Paris and elsewhere in Europe. The Institute expects regular participation in the community of Fellows. The program therefore combines substantial independent working time with an extended intellectual and creative community based at Reid Hall. The Institute states that it cannot accommodate groups, so applications must be made as individual Fellowships.

Who Should Apply
The Institute accepts applications through three specific categories.
Columbia University faculty: Columbia tenured and tenure-track faculty, Barnard faculty, and Teachers College faculty are eligible. Adjunct professors and lecturers are eligible when their term of appointment extends beyond the fellowship year. Faculty should notify their department chair or Dean of their intention to apply. Faculty are the only applicants eligible to apply for a single-semester Fellowship.
Columbia University postdoctoral candidates: Candidates in any subject who completed their PhD and defended their dissertation at Columbia University between September 2024 and December 31, 2026 are eligible.
Creative arts applicants: The creative arts category includes applicants working within fields including visual and sound arts, film, composing, and writing who are unaffiliated with Columbia University. Creative arts applicants cannot be permanently residing in the United States, regardless of nationality.
The Institute cannot accommodate groups.
