SITE Project: Contemporary Performance Event and Gallery Exhibition
Curated by Whitney V. Hunter

SITE Project is a month-long gallery exhibition and two-night contemporary performance event. The exhibition features 10 invited NY-based African diasporic, visual and time-based artists charged to respond to the theme/idea/concept of “site” through their own unique artistic processes and practices. “My intent with the SITE Project, is to cultivate, through the vehicle of exhibition and performance, the African Diasporic collective consciousness. It is through these artistic means, that realities of identity, community, and kinship can be revealed,” Whitney V. Hunter (curator).

The two-day stage performance will feature Hunter’s solo work, da Travla, a progressive, rhythmically intent, physical and aural journey, inspired by the “Great Migration” of African Americans from the rural south to the urban north during the early to mid 1900’s. Accompanied by the eclectic, acapella vocals of performer/vocalist Preach R Sun (HBO “Def Poetry Jam”, “One-Man”), they explore the implication of folk tradition in contemporary performance.

The second act will feature SITE (for which the project takes its name), a group work presented during the opening night of NY SummerStage 2012. SITE is a work of action and process, and an exploration of initiation as a practice of self-discovery and kinship, set to an entrancing score of collected sounds from field recordings, Orisha music, contemporary blues and hip hop, and original text from guest performer, photographer/visual artist Myron Christian Macauley’s book, Modern Man in Search of Soul, arranged by musician Arthur Solari.
