Job Description:
30 minutes from midtown manhattan, Sarah Lawrence College seeks a Production Manager in the Theatre program. The Theatre Program is a community of generous and engaged artists who value diverse, intentional, and rigorous research, process, and creation. The Production Manager oversees production projects, events, and classrooms at Sarah Lawrence by organizing the production budget, managing student employment in the production manager’s office, setting production crew schedules, and supervising student production projects and teams while giving close mentorship to student stage managers and production managers. The Production Manager collaborates with the Media Supervisor, Lighting Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Costume Shop Supervisor, Downstage Manager, Puppet Shop Manager, Program Manager, and Associate Producer to support productions, program events, and classroom needs. They organize rehearsals, tech, production scheduling, production budgets, production office student worker timesheets, theatre inventory, props, scenic checkouts, and purchasing resources and theatrical equipment. They should oversee the safety and maintenance of each theatre in the Performing Arts Center, making sure each space is in working order for both classroom needs and performance needs. The Production Manager reports weekly to the Director of the Program regarding show builds, crew timelines, budgets, and updates on production elements. They are supported by a student staff of undergraduates and graduate assistants.

Students taking stage management/production management courses and stage managers/production managers for productions will work closely with the production manager for advising on projects and productions. There should be a clear understanding of the program’s educational process-focused pedagogy in every project. As a central part of student theatre production, it is important that the Production Manager leads with care, positivity, creative problem solving, and efficiency in service of a joyful learning experience for all students. This is a 35-hour-per-week staff position with a 4-hour-per-week Affiliate Faculty position (to teach two 2 hr. a week classes in Stage Management and Production Management) for 39 hours per week. 10-month contract (August 1st – May 31st) paid over 12 months.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Serve as liaison for all production departments including Lighting, Technical, Costume, Scenic, Media, Puppetry, and Downstage led by other staff and faculty members
  • Instruct stage management and production management classes and mentor student production managers and stage managers through classwork assignments and semester production placements.
  • Attend all technical and dress rehearsals
  • Manage production budget and allocate funds for departments responsibly
  • Create semester calendars with the Director of Program and Program Manager
  • See that crews are on schedule and productions are staying within scope
  • Oversee production office student wages budget and log timesheets of work-study students
  • Oversee student practicum assignments
  • Work with design faculty to place students as production designers
  • Purchasing of inventory, equipment, props, and scenic items
  • Ensure the safety of all theatre spaces
  • Support graduate student employees to produce First Look Reading Series and MFA Thesis Performance Festival
  • See that student-led production meetings are being held for each semester project on a regular basis in a quick and efficient format
  • Facilitate faculty supervisors, student designers, and staff to agreed-upon deadlines
  • Support duplication of scripts and digital production programs
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager and Associate Producer to make sure Front of House arrangements are in place for each production and special events

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferred MFA or professional equivalence
  • Proficiency in production management
  • Proficiency in management competencies
  • Responsible and organized while maintaining the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work collaboratively and strategically with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds
  • Be able to work with a wide range of personalities (i.e. students, faculty, professional performing artists, in-house production support, stagehands, and external production crews)
  • Self-starting, interested in thinking ahead and about how systems can be improved, and able to work independently
  • Experience with Google Docs and/or Microsoft Office
  • Preferred in Vectorworks or AutoCad
  • Preferred minimum of 1-3 years of academic staff and/or teaching experience.
