Sarah Lawrence College seeks a Media Supervisor that will serve two separate academic performance programs in Theatre and Dance. Both located in the Performing Arts Center, each program operates separately with its own curriculum, faculty, and performance season. Theatre and Dance, however, are often interwoven as students are encouraged to make work and take courses in both disciplines. Each program works together to consider the scheduling of season projects to avoid overlapping tech weeks and performances. The Theatre and the Dance Program are each communities of generous and engaged artists who value diverse, intentional, and rigorous research, process, and creation. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum that prioritizes equality, care, and experimentation, both strive to create an artistic environment steeped in joy to envision and build a responsible future.
The Media Supervisor oversees all aspects of media in the performance spaces, productions, events, classrooms, and rehearsal studios of the Performing Arts Center. While supporting the needs of both Theatre and Dance productions, this position also includes an affiliate teaching faculty position in Theatre instructing two courses in Media Production and Design, enrolled with students from both Theatre and Dance. The Media Supervisor maintains sound and video in Performing Arts Center spaces, maintains media equipment budgets, schedules and oversees a student media crew, manages student employment of the media crew, and mentors individuals and teams of student media designers for the Theatre and Dance production seasons. All students taking sound and video courses and media crew members will work closely with the Media supervisor for advising on design projects, patching, and troubleshooting through a technical process. The Media Supervisor reports weekly to the Directors of the Theatre and Dance Programs regarding show builds, crew timelines, budgets, and updates on production elements.
It is imperative that the Media Supervisor make safety a priority in all Performing Arts Center spaces and while leading the media student crew. They should oversee equipment maintenance ensuring that each space is safely set up with classroom and performance needs. The Media Supervisor reports weekly to both the Director of the Theatre Program and to the Director of the Dance Program regarding timelines, budgets, and updates on production elements for Theatre and to support media needs for Dance classes and productions.
This position is supported by a student staff of undergraduates and graduate assistants in theatre. There should be a clear understanding of both the Theatre and Dance program’s educational process-focused pedagogy in every project. As a central part of student theatre production, it is essential that the Media Supervisor leads with care, positivity, creative problem solving, and intentionality to provide a joyful learning experience for all students. The Media Supervisor collaborates with the Production Manager, Lighting Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Costume Shop Supervisor, Downstage Manager, Puppet Shop Manager, Program Manager, and Associate Producer to support productions, program events, and classroom needs. This position breaks down into 35 hours as production staff for Theatre and Dance with a 4 hour per week Affiliate Faculty position instructing two classes that meet once a week for two hours (Media Design 1 and Media Design 2) for a total of 39 hours per week. The position comes with a generous health insurance and retirement package. 10-month contract (August 1st – May 31st) paid over 12 months.
Responsibilities Include:
- Maintain media budgets
- Set media crew schedules
- Manage media crew student employment
- Participate in the creation of sound and video budgets
- Maintain and track sound and video inventories
- Advise student media designers in student projects in theatre and production in dance
- Attend all technical and dress rehearsals
- Attend production meetings and technical rehearsals
- Provide supervision for all load-in and work calls during the production process
- Oversee student wages budget and log timesheets of work-study students for the media crew
- Oversee and enforce safety protocols
- Identify and propose upgrades for all AV systems
- Maintain performance, rehearsal, and classroom sound systems
- Knowledge of audio, video, and communications equipment as they relate to technical design needs
- Knowledge of audio and video delivery systems and show control software
- Ability to convey technical information to a non-technical audience

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferred MFA or professional equivalence
- Proficiency in multimedia production
- Proficiency in Vectorworks or AutoCad
- Proficiency in sound and video programs as well show control software
- Responsible and organized, while maintaining the ability to multi-task
- Ability to work collaboratively and strategically with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds
- Be able to work with a wide range of personalities (i.e. students, faculty, professional performing artists, in-house production support, stagehands, and external production crews)
- Self-starting, interested in thinking ahead and about how systems can be improved, and able to work independently
- Experience with Google Docs and/or Microsoft Office
- Preferred minimum of 1-3 years of academic staff and/or teaching experience.
