The K3 Choreography Residency | Tanzplan Hamburg is now accepting applications for its 2027/2028 residency programme. Three choreographers will be selected for an eight-month residency in Hamburg from August 2027 through April 2028. The programme supports artists at the beginning of their professional careers who have already produced independent choreographic work. Residents receive a monthly scholarship for living expenses and accommodation, travel support, studio access, production resources, and artistic support while developing a new full-length project for public presentation. The K3 Choreography Residency uses a two-stage selection process that evaluates artistic practice before examining the proposed residency project in greater depth. The first application asks applicants to demonstrate that they already have an established choreographic practice through biographies, work samples, and a concise project description. Shortlisted applicants are then invited to submit an expanded proposal and participate in an interview. This structure allows the selection panel to assess artistic quality, independent working methods, and the applicant’s readiness for a long-term residency before reviewing a more detailed project plan.

The accompanying Strategy Coach Notes break down every stage of the application, explain how reviewers interpret the required materials, analyse the evaluation process, and identify where strong applications distinguish themselves. Members of the Contemporary Performance Network also receive application planning tools, proposal frameworks, and strategic guidance for preparing competitive residency applications.

About the K3 Choreography Residency

K3 Choreography Residency | Tanzplan Hamburg has developed one of Europe’s leading long-term residency programmes for choreographers working in contemporary performance. Each residency supports artistic research, project development, and the creation of a new full-length choreographic work over eight months. Rather than concentrating activity into a short production period, the programme provides residents with sustained time to investigate ideas, develop methodology, work with collaborators, and prepare a public presentation. Applications are welcome from artists working across choreographic practices, including stage performance, public space, dance for young audiences, and film.

Residents become part of the artistic environment at K3 throughout the residency period. In addition to financial support, they receive studio access, dramaturgical guidance, technical assistance, organisational support, and public relations assistance from the K3 team. Residents also participate in outreach activities and engage with audiences and the wider artistic community in Hamburg. During the 2027/2028 season, K3 and Kampnagel will undergo building renovations. Studio access will remain available throughout the residency, while final performances will take place at partner theatres and alternative venues across Hamburg.

Who Should Apply to The K3 Choreography Residency

The residency is intended for individual choreographers who are between the emerging and early mid-career stages of professional practice. Applicants should already have experience producing independent choreographic work outside an educational setting and should be prepared to demonstrate that experience through previous projects and work samples. Applicants must be available to live and work in Hamburg for the full residency period from August 2027 through April 2028. The programme welcomes applications from all countries and does not require formal dance education. Applications from teams and ensembles are not eligible.
