About the Camargo Fellowship
Founded by artist and philanthropist Jerome Hill, the Camargo Foundation has supported artists and researchers for more than five decades through an international residency program centered on research, experimentation, and interdisciplinary exchange. Located in Cassis, France, the Foundation brings together artists, scholars, and thinkers from around the world to pursue independent work while participating in a collaborative residential community. Since 1971, more than 1,500 fellows have participated in the program.
For artists, the Fellowship is intentionally structured as a research residency rather than a production residency. Applicants propose a project or area of inquiry they intend to develop during their stay. Projects may focus on the development of a new artwork, research that precedes future creative work, or broader investigations within an artist’s practice. Throughout the residency, fellows also contribute to the community by leading a resident session designed around their own research or methodology. Attendance at these sessions is mandatory for all fellows, reinforcing the Foundation’s emphasis on dialogue and interdisciplinary exchange.
The Foundation encourages experimentation and provides time, space, and intellectual community. Applicants should understand that the residency is not designed to finance major production. While studio space, housing, and research facilities are provided, the Foundation does not supply art materials, technical equipment, or shipping for artworks. Visual artists are specifically reminded that the Fellowship prioritizes research over production. Applicants whose projects require extensive fabrication or specialized technical resources should consider whether the residency aligns with their project’s needs.
Another defining feature is the interdisciplinary cohort. Each year, fourteen fellowships are awarded, including seven artists and seven scholars or thinkers. Residents are encouraged to share their research through resident sessions, optional public open studios, and ongoing conversation with peers. The Foundation also facilitates introductions to professionals and organizations in the Aix-Marseille-Provence region when appropriate to the fellow’s work.

Who Should Apply
This fellowship is intended for established practitioners with a sustained professional practice. Performance artists, theatre directors, choreographers, multidisciplinary artists, writers, filmmakers, composers, visual artists, scholars, and thinkers are eligible within their respective categories. Artist applicants should demonstrate at least five years of professional practice and a mature body of work supported by exhibitions, performances, publications, awards, grants, or comparable achievements. Collaborative applications of up to three members are also eligible.
