La Pocha Nostra Live Art Laboratory:
ATHENS, GREECE
International Performance Intensive: June 10th – 24th, 2013
Get ready locos y locas: In 2013 — for the first time ever — La Pocha Nostra relocates its annual summer school from Oaxaca, Mexico to Athens, Greece!! Spaces are limited and expected to fill quickly so please submit your application early.
Guillermo Gómez-Peña and the members of La Pocha Nostra will host their legendary summer performance workshop in the city of Athens from June 10-24, 2013. Athens has become an increasingly important cultural capital and a highly politicized site perfect for this year’s popular international performance intensive. In addition to the 12 day intensive workshop (culminating with a jam session open to the public) the full schedule will include a two-day excursion to the spiritually charged city of Delphi where participants will have the opportunity to create site specific installations in the ancient home of the temple of Apollo and Athena.
The project is being co-produced by Emma Tramposch, Fotini Kalle, Vassilis Vlastaras and the Theater of Athens School of Fine Arts.
The workshop will be open to performance artists, experimental actors, dancers, theorists, activists and students from all over the world. The Pocha/Greek committee will be selecting 22 participants from throughout Greece, Europe, the Balkans as well as the Americas.
We consider our international performance schools to be La Pocha Nostra’s most important pedagogic endeavor of the year. We expect this workshop to fill quickly so we encourage applications in advance of the deadline.
About the Pocha workshop:
This summer intensive will be led by troupe members Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Erica Mott, Saul Garcia Lopez & Dani d’Emilia. The focus will be on new performance art strategies and the human body as a site for creation, reinvention, memory and activism. We will also place particular emphasis in the relationship between the human body and architecture by intervening different indoor and outdoor spaces. At the end of the workshop we will have an epic jam session open to the local arts community. This amazing cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary and cross-generational laboratory will only host 22 participants.
The infamous ‘Pocha workshop’ is internationally recognized as “an amazing artistic and anthropological experiment in which carefully selected artists from several countries and every imaginable artistic, ethnic sub-cultural background and gender persuasion, begin to negotiate common ground. Performance becomes the connective tissue and lingua franca for our temporary community of rebel artists.”
As always, space will be limited and is expected to fill quickly. We encourage all interested applicants to submit materials to us as soon as possible. Application guidelines are included below.
What will be taught?
The exciting 8-hour a day workshop will offer two parallel processes: Participants are exposed to La Pocha Nostra’s most recent performance methodologies, an eclectic sampling of exercises borrowed from multiple sources including performance art, experimental theater and dance, the Suzuki method, ritual shamanism, performance games and live jam sessions. Parallel to this hands-on process, the group will analyze the creative process, the issues addressed by the work, its aesthetic currency, cultural impact and political pertinence. We will also organize various performance interventions into other city spaces. In the tradition of the Pocha summer school, and to round up the pedagogical experiment, the workshop will culminate with an exciting live art jam session open to the local arts community.
Who should attend?
Performance artists, experimental actors, dancers, theorists, activists and students interested in the topics addressed by La Pocha Nostra. Ages can fluctuate from 20 to 80 years old. It is crucial that applicants are familiar with La Pocha Nostra’s ideas & aesthetics. We provide several resources at the bottom of this convocatory to better familiarize yourself in advance. The workshop is extremely fun as well as physically and intellectually rigorous. We welcome new colleagues as well as past participants from previous workshops who wish to further their relationship with the troupe.
