Get The Application Strategy

Neuwerk publishes unusually specific jury criteria. Reviewers assess the artistic quality and independence of previous work, the quality and feasibility of the proposed residency project, the importance of the residency for the applicant’s artistic development, potential for exchange and cultural mediation, and the applicant’s contribution to the diversity of the program. The application reinforces these criteria through a two-page project and motivation letter, a separate proposal for public programming, a recent portfolio, and a financing overview. Applicants therefore need a project that can function within the May and June residency period, lead coherently toward the exhibition, and support a credible public format.

About the Neuwerk Lake Residency

Neuwerk Lake Residency is a new artist-in-residence program initiated in 2026 by Neuwerk eG in cooperation with the Kulturamt der Stadt Konstanz. The program launches with its first residency in 2027. Neuwerk describes the program as a way to provide time and space for concentrated artistic work, new impulses, interdisciplinary exchange, and connections among regional and international perspectives, the city of Konstanz, the Lake Constance cultural region, and the working communities housed at Neuwerk. The call is open across all fields of contemporary art and design.

The first selected artist will work at Neuwerk from May 1 through June 30, 2027. The 116 m² studio has basic furnishings, residential use, and accessibility. The resulting or further-developed work will then be presented in the Gewölbekeller of the Kulturzentrum am Münster in Konstanz. The exhibition period runs from June through September 2027, with an opening planned for mid or late June. The artist is also expected to engage with a public accompanying format. Neuwerk lists Artist Talks, Open Studios, workshops, and Werkstattgespräche as possible forms.

The residency is open to professionally working emerging artists with an independent practice in contemporary art or design. Why The Neuwerk Lake Residency Matters

Neuwerk Lake Residency combines a defined studio period with an exhibition and a required public-facing dimension. The jury criteria make the relationship among these components important to the application. Applicants need to present a feasible residency project, demonstrate how the period in Konstanz contributes to their artistic development, and propose a meaningful form of exchange or cultural mediation. The 116 m² studio provides substantial working space and residential use. Applicants should account carefully for the financial structure because travel, daily living expenses, insurance, artist fees, and specialized production resources remain their responsibility.
