About the Dance Residency
DANCE BOX has developed this residency around a specific set of questions concerning movement, migration, cultural exchange, and the preservation of local artistic practices. The program asks artists to consider how cultural mobility reshapes communities, traditions, and forms of artistic knowledge. Applicants are encouraged to investigate these conditions through performance, research, documentation, community engagement, and interdisciplinary artistic methods.
The dance residency takes place in Shin-Nagata, an area of Kobe with a strong local identity and an active community network. Residents will have access to community centers, studios, and other spaces suited to their project needs. The selected artist will also participate in the local context through at least one workshop for residents. The residency concludes with a public presentation and the creation of a tangible archival artifact. The call identifies formats such as zines, performances, installations, artist talks, exhibitions, and videos as possible outcomes.

Why This Dance Residency Matters
Many international residencies support artistic development. Fewer opportunities are built around a clearly defined thematic framework, a specific local context, and a required archival outcome. DANCE BOX combines research, community engagement, public presentation, and documentation within a focused one-month structure. The residency is particularly relevant for artists interested in performance research, cultural exchange, folk traditions, contemporary archiving practices, and socially engaged artistic work.
