Development-based residency for early-career performing artists in New York City.
The Ars Nova Artists in Residence program is accepting applications for its 2026–2027 cohort. Designed for early-career performing artists across multiple disciplines, the residency supports artistic development over the course of a ten-month season through individualized mentorship, institutional resources, and participation in an interdisciplinary cohort. Rather than focusing on the production of a finished work, the residency provides time, space, and sustained support to help artists advance a project, expand their practice, and build lasting relationships within the Ars Nova community.

Get the Application Strategy
Many residencies ask applicants to describe a project. Ars Nova asks applicants to describe how they develop work, how they engage with artistic communities, how they collaborate, and how they will contribute to a year-long cohort. Those distinctions shape the review process.
Our Strategy Coach Notes examine every application question, explain what reviewers are likely assessing, and break down how to build a stronger application using the structure of the residency itself.
About the Ars Nova Artists in Residence
The Ars Nova Artists in Residence program is structured around artistic development rather than production. Over a ten-month residency, selected artists work with the Ars Nova Artistic Team to establish goals for a specific project and build a development plan that evolves throughout the season. Residents receive individualized support while participating in a cohort of artists working across multiple disciplines. Monthly gatherings create opportunities to exchange ideas, share work in progress, attend performances together, and develop relationships that extend beyond the residency itself.
The application reflects this structure. Generative artists are asked to describe the project they want to develop, previous developmental steps, future goals, and the resources they hope to access during the residency. Interpretive artists, including directors, dramaturgs, creative producers, and curators, are evaluated differently. Their application focuses on artistic practice, community building, artist development, and the perspectives they would contribute to Ars Nova’s programming. This distinction makes it important for applicants to respond directly to the questions for their artistic role rather than adapting a general project statement.

Why The Ars Nova Artists in Residence Matters
Many performing arts residencies provide rehearsal space or short-term development support. Ars Nova offers a longer development cycle built around artistic practice, interdisciplinary exchange, and institutional mentorship. The residency gives artists time to refine projects while building relationships with peers and the Artistic Team across an entire season.
The application demonstrates that Ars Nova values process, collaboration, and artistic curiosity. The written questions consistently ask applicants to explain how they develop work, engage artistic communities, contribute to a cohort, and use the residency’s resources. Artists who present a clear development plan aligned with the residency’s structure are likely to submit stronger applications.
