For the third year in a row. new music ensemble thingNY presents their community opera project, SPAM. In late September a cryptic email was sent out calling on friends and strangers to create or devise a work on the theme of “assembly” utilizing some, none or all of the six musicians of thingNY. The catch: all emails and submissions are to be performed in part or in whole. The result is a multi-room, multi-instrumental soiree celebrating the vibrant community of experimental artists and the diversity of creative amateurs. Over time, the SPAM project has also charted the ensemble’s artistic community, revealing immediate aesthetic and formal contexts for the work of the ensemble’s composer-performers Gelsey Bell, Andrew Livingston, Paul Pinto, Erin Rogers, Dave Ruder and Jeffrey Young.
All 60-something new works and 100-something emails will be performed in some manner around the space (sometimes simultaneously and sometimes more than once).
